Valve adding mandatory AI use disclosures to games on Steam stoked some discussion, with the likes of Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney calling the policy "really irresponsible" and unfair to game developers. I interviewed nearly three dozen game developers about generative AI for industry-facing and indie-focused reports, and several of them mentioned Steam's and similar store disclosures, arguing that gen AI use should be clear to consumers.
"Gamers have a right to know how their games are made, and a right to choose what they’re supporting," says Brian "Burgee," creator of simulated MMO Erenshor. "Steam's required AI disclosure is the right move here for the sake of transparency."
