State Department Watchdog Finds Protocol Breach In Security Clearance

People enter the State Department Building in Washington

The State Department's internal watchdog released a report on Wednesday revealing that officials did not adhere to proper protocol in managing the security clearance suspension of the U.S. special envoy for Iran. The envoy, Rob Malley, faced allegations last year of mishandling classified information.

According to the inspector general report obtained by The Associated Press, officials were found to have deviated from standard procedures, allowing Malley access to classified meetings and information that should have been restricted. The report highlighted a lack of standard policies for political appointees and inadequate supervision of Malley, leading to confusion regarding his authorized work post-suspension.

Malley, who played a key role in the Biden administration's efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal and address issues concerning detained Americans in Iran, was placed on unpaid leave in June 2023 following the mishandling allegations.

The envoy's absence from a classified congressional briefing on Iran in May 2023 initially raised concerns. State Department officials informed lawmakers that Malley was on extended personal leave, hinting at a possible family health matter.

Over the past year, Republican members of Congress have been pressing the State Department for more details on Malley's suspension and the related allegations. The forthcoming release of the watchdog report to Congress is anticipated to intensify calls for accountability from the State Department.
