The State Department has announced a $5 million reward for information leading to the capture of a Hezbollah commander targeted by Israel in a recent strike on Beirut. The individual in question, known as Fu’ad Shukr or al-Hajj Mohsin, is a prominent figure within Hezbollah, serving on the Jihad Council, the organization's highest military body. Shukr has been actively involved in supporting Hezbollah fighters and pro-Syrian regime troops in their military operations against Syrian opposition forces in Syria.
Of particular significance is Shukr's alleged central role in the devastating October 23, 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut, an attack that resulted in the tragic loss of 241 U.S. military personnel and left 128 others wounded. This incident underscores the gravity of Shukr's involvement in acts of terrorism and violence.
In response to his actions, the State Department designated Shukr as a “Specially Designated Global Terrorist” in September 2019, pursuant to Executive Order 13224. This designation came after the U.S. Treasury Department had already imposed sanctions on Shukr and two other Hezbollah leaders more than four years prior.
The Rewards for Justice website, operated by the State Department, is offering the substantial reward in exchange for information that could lead to the apprehension of Shukr. This initiative reflects the U.S. government's commitment to combating terrorism and holding individuals accountable for their involvement in violent acts.
