State co-pay scheme fuels food delivery growth

Quick meals, noodles, and coffee or tea are among the top orders via food delivery platforms under the "Thai Chuay Thai Plus" state co-payment scheme.

As of June 17, spending via food delivery platforms tallied 272 million baht.

According to Line Man Wongnai, more than 300,000 users who participated in the scheme redeemed benefits on Line Man on June 15 -- the first day the platform offered the scheme.

The most popular categories remained single-dish meals, noodles, and coffee and tea, which are staples and easy to find.

The basket size per order increased by 5% compared with the previous "Khon La Khrueng Plus" scheme, attributed to the higher subsidy amount in this round, which encouraged consumers to spend more per order.

In terms of the impact on merchants, the gross merchandise value of participating restaurants grew by around 90% compared with June 15.

Coffee shops and milk tea stores saw particularly strong growth of up to 120%, reflecting consumers' tendency to use the benefit on everyday items that they purchase regularly and can decide to buy immediately when additional discounts are offered.

GrabFood revealed that, on its first day of offering the co-pay scheme on June 15, the top three restaurant categories in terms of orders were made-to-order food, tea and coffee shops, and noodle shops.

The top five menu items were som tum, Hainanese chicken rice, larb moo (spicy minced pork salad), grilled pork neck, and Thai milk tea.

Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri, Khon Kaen and Nakhon Ratchasima were the top five provinces for usage, with peak orders during lunchtime between 10am and noon.

Nearly 60% of users placed orders valued at 100–250 baht, followed by orders of less than 100 baht (roughly 30%).

The top-selling restaurant was Baan Salmon Hoy Nangrom Talay Dong Nonthaburi (salmon, oyster and pickled seafood house), which generated total sales of more than 60,000 baht from 164 orders.
