Starmer authorises terror ban on Iran’s Revolutionary Guard

  • Keir Starmer has authorised the proscription of Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) due to identified "threats to life and intimidation on UK soil".
  • The decision follows years of debate and links between the IRGC and recent terrorist incidents in the UK.
  • The Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR), also linked to Iran, and the volunteer corps of Russia's GRU have also been designated as terrorist organisations.
  • Proscription makes it a criminal offence to invite support for, assist, or accept material benefits from these designated groups.
  • This action comes after ministers fast-tracked the National Security (State Threats) Act, aiming to disrupt individuals promoting the interests of such bodies.
