The manufacturer behind the viral Stanley Quencher tumbler is recalling approximately 2.6 million stainless steel travel mugs after multiple reports of burn injuries from lids that detached during use, the company announced Thursday.

The voluntary recall applies to all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs sold in the U.S. from June 2016 through December 2024, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The affected mugs, made in China, were widely available through major retailers such as Amazon, Walmart, Target, and Dick’s Sporting Goods, with prices ranging from $20 to $50.

Stanley said it has received 91 reports of lids detaching, 16 of which occurred in the U.S. These incidents have resulted in 38 burn injuries total, including two in the U.S. Nearly a dozen individuals required medical attention for the burns.

In a statement posted to Facebook, Stanely encouraged owners of the mugs to immediately stop use and reach out for a free replacement lid.

"At Stanley 1913, we are committed to constant improvement and are focused on creating quality products that are built for life," the statement read.

According to the CPSC, the issue arises when the lid threads shrink after exposure to heat and torque, leading to the possibility of the lids detaching. The Stanley logo is prominently displayed on the front and bottom of the mugs, along with a product identification number.

Consumers can verify if their mug is affected by checking the number on the base of their product and can also visit Stanely's official recall site for the product.
