Stanford students upset after school has major AI mistake on banner

  • Stanford University removed campus promotional banners after acknowledging an image was altered using artificial intelligence to replace a Hispanic student with an image of a Black woman and alter the appearances of two others.
  • The original photo was taken during a 2024 Lunar New Year event, and its alteration violated Stanford's explicit policy prohibiting the use of AI to produce or alter images of university students and events.
  • Billy Ramirez, the student erased from the photograph, stated that the change made him feel silenced and erased from representation meant to include him.
  • Two other students pictured called for an official apology, an investigation, and a ban on AI-generated student photos, with one student filing a formal discrimination claim.
  • Stanford University confirmed the policy violation and announced plans to provide additional staff training and ensure proper review of all promotional materials.
