A committee of MPs has urged the government to overhaul stamp duty, arguing that the current system acts as a significant barrier to homeownership and stifles the property market. The call for reform aims to help more people get on the property ladder across England and Northern Ireland.
The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee recommended a consultation be launched by the end of 2026 to explore potential alternatives. Their report highlighted a stark reality: "For decades, skyrocketing house prices, slow wage growth and unnecessary barriers in the market have contributed to a deterioration in the affordability of homeownership in England."
