STALKER 2 just got a big Xbox feature ahead of its new Cost of Hope DLC — new details about the expansion have me excited to return to The Zone

Fans of the popular 2024 open-world survival-horror FPS STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl have been waiting for news on its planned DLC expansions since the game came out, and now, it's finally come. During Thursday's Xbox Partner Preview, developer GSC Game World announced the game's first of two expansions, Cost of Hope.

The DLC is coming to all of the shooter's platforms — Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC (Steam, Epic Games, GOG), and PS5 — with a scheduled release window of Summer 2026. That means Cost of Hope, though still coming soon, is several months away. Notably, however, the Xbox version of STALKER 2 has actually gotten a huge upgrade that fans can take advantage of right now.

That upgrade is the addition of Microsoft's Xbox Play Anywhere feature to STALKER 2, which means that players can now transfer ownership of and saved progress in GSC Game World's sequel across Xbox Series X|S consoles, the Xbox on PC app, Xbox Ally handhelds, and Xbox Cloud Gaming as long as you're using the same Microsoft account across all devices and services.

It's awesome that STALKER 2 finally has Xbox Play Anywhere support, especially since it's exactly the type of game it's the most valuable in — a vast and deep open-world experience packed with paths to take, quests to do, and secrets to find. Indeed, it takes well over 100 hours to see everything The Zone has in store, and being able to continue the adventure no matter what platform you're on at any given time is a major boon.

The journey through STALKER's dynamic and immersive world will only grow even larger when the Cost of Hope releases later this year, with GSC Game World describing it in a new preview as "a large expansion that’s worth your wait" that will take "dozens of hours to complete — and those who want to see everything will easily add quite a few more on top."

In the DLC's two new zones, the Iron Forest and the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant at the heart of The Zone itself, the devs say you'll come across "More engaging quests, more memorable characters and their stories, and more answers to the questions raised both in Heart of Chornobyl and the original games" from the late 2000s.

In terms of story, Cost of Hope will put you back in the boots of STALKER 2 protagonist Skif, and you'll find yourself caught up in a brewing conflict between Duty — a faction of those who believe The Zone should be destroyed — and Freedom, which wants to figure out how to use it to help humanity instead. The events of the DLC will threaten to break the fragile peace treaty that's held for years, and occur concurrently to the game's main narrative.

GSC has also said that Cost of Hope is something of a second entry in a "trilogy" that began with STALKER 2, similar to the original STALKER trilogy and the connected story it told. The game's second DLC will be the third release that concludes it.

As a longtime fan of STALKER, a huge new DLC that focuses directly on Duty and Freedom is very exciting, as the two factions played very prominent roles in all three of the original titles. I loved STALKER 2 at launch, flaws and all, and it's gotten significantly better over time with major performance fixes and new additions; all of those improvements as well as this upcoming DLC have me incredibly stoked to return to The Zone.

🗨️ Will you return to STALKER 2?

Between the addition of Xbox Play Anywhere support on Xbox and PC and the news that the game's first major DLC, the Cost of Hope, is coming this summer, it's an exciting time to be a STALKER 2 player. I'm certainly diving back in for a second playthrough, myself.

How about you, though? Are you looking forward to Cost of Hope, and will you come back to STALKER 2 to play it? Let me know in the comments, and vote in our poll:
