Staff at the University of Glasgow’s Dumfries campus are set to strike later this year.
Unison members who work at the Crichton in cleaning, administration, library, catering and security have voted for industrial action after rejecting a “ludicrously low” offer of three per cent.
The union had asked the University and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) for 12 per cent, two per cent above inflation.
Unison’s head of education Mike Short said: “Low pay has been a massive problem for the university sector for over a decade.
“Staff have become expert at stretching their pay to make ends meet. But the shock of the cost-of-living crisis has pushed many to breaking point.”
He added: “It’s always a very difficult decision to strike but staff feel they’ve been left with no choice.
“A three per cent pay award is nowhere near enough and the employers know it. This ludicrously low increase does nothing to ease the financial pressures for thousands of struggling staff.
“Managers must put people before profits and pay staff proper, fair wages.”
“Employers want to work with Unison and other unions to support staff and students but isolated strike action over already awarded pay may simply hurt students and staff for no obvious outcome.”
