St Paul's Cathedral service targeted by octogenarian Just Stop Oil activists

Two octogerian Just Stop Oil protesters disrupted a thanksgiving service at St Paul's Cathedral in London on Thursday morning.

Sue Parfitt, 81, an active Anglican priest and retired psychotherapist from Bristol, and Judy Bruce, 83, a biology teacher from Swansea, walked into the middle of the congregation as they stood singing in a circle.

One of the protesters held an orange banner that read "Will our children thank us?" while the other woman held a banner with Just Stop Oil written in black lettering.

They were slowly ushered out of the church while people continued to sing. One woman appeared to be holding a walking stick in a video posted of the protest to social media.

Just Stop Oil claimed Reverend Jennifer Mills-Knutsen said: "Parade and protest, praise and petition are one in the same."

City of London police were seen attending the scene, as the women were escorted out by security.

St Paul's Cathedral said in a statement: "Earlier today, two members of the public staged a silent protest during the thanksgiving service.

"They engaged positively with cathedral staff and they left peacefully after a short while."

Speaking before the action, Ms Parfitt and Ms Bruce said in a joint statement: "Eight years ago, our governments pledged to reduce carbon emissions – but they, along with twenty of the largest oil producing nations, are now planning to increase oil and gas production.

"We are two women in our eighties who feel we must do whatever we can before we die to turn this around. Our young people need hope — but hope must be earned by action."

Meanwhile a dozen Just Stop Oil activists were arrested "within two minutes" after staging a protest in Whitehall at midday on Thursday.

Metropolitan Police said in a statement: "For the third successive day officers have arrested 12 Just Stop Oil activists within two minutes.

"Whitehall also reopened in the same amount of time. These arrests were made by officers who could have been working in our 32 London boroughs."

Just Stop Oil said supporters are in their fourth week of marching "to the point of arrest" as they call on the Government to halt all future licences and consents for fossil fuel exploration in the UK.

The group said 11 people began marching on the pavement from Trafalgar Square to Parliament Square and were followed by around 40 Met officers.

"When they arrived at Parliament Square they stepped onto the road and were immediately arrested," Just Stop Oil said.

Protester Jane Touil, 57, a visually impaired community worker from Rochdale, who said: "I am not a criminal. I’m an ordinary person who has worked hard, paid my taxes and played by the rules all my life. Government policies are driving climate breakdown and keeping energy bills high.

"The Government is acting in the interest of its oil industry donors and it seems happy to sacrifice a stable climate which sustains human life for short term profit. Our ‘leaders’ are the criminals and the police should launch an investigation into their crimes against humanity."

It comes just days after nine Just Stop Oil activists were arrested after they slow-marched in Whitehall on Monday.Meanwhile a court heard how damage made to glass protecting a National Gallery painting allegedly inflicted by Just Stop Oil protesters will cost more than £6,000 to repair.
