St Mirren Women were in seventh heaven after thumping BSC Glasgow in their final home game of the season.
And head coach Kate Cooper revealed she wishes their tough SWF Championship campaign wasn’t coming to an end just as her side are catching fire.
The Buddies thumped seven unanswered goals past BSC at Mossedge Village on Sunday afternoon to seal back-to-back wins for the first time this year.
Having suffered a difficult season with player availability due to injury and the coronavirus pandemic, the Saints have finally hit form.
Unfortunately for the Paisley side they only have one game left to capitalise on their momentum, an away trip to face Stenhousemuir on Sunday, April 10.
But Cooper is still relieved for her players and believes their hard work in often difficult circumstances over the last six months is finally paying off.
Cooper told Express Sport: “It was a very good performance against BSC and a lot of things clicked for the players.
“It’s actually sad we’re getting to the end of the season.
“That’s two wins on the bounce now and we don’t want the season to end.
“We could have done with this kind of run three months ago, but at the end of the day we’re just delighted for the players because it’s been a really tough shift for them this season.
“Hopefully we can take this positive feeling forward into the summer and come back even stronger next season.
“The aim for us now is to keep this group of players together, because we’ve had to regenerate the team a couple of times already in the last few years.
“Winning breeds that happiness, because they can feel the good work they’re doing is paying off. It’s a really committed group and they’ve worked incredibly hard.
“We’ve got Stenny away in our last game and we lost to them the first time around, so it’ll be interesting to see how we match up this time.
“If we can finish the season with three straight wins that would be a huge boost to everyone involved with the club.”
A first-half brace from Francesca Blair got the Buddies on track on Sunday, with Gemma Dickson all but making the result certain just after half-time.
Skipper Karen McCabe netted from the penalty spot after a clear BSC handball, before 15-year-old academy graduate Sarah Petherick grabbed a brace herself off the bench – the second of which was a thunderbolt from outside the box.
Sarah Nicol completed the scoring, with Cooper delighted with how her players continued to press on despite having the three points already wrapped up so early in the second half.
Cooper said: “The plan here is to develop our own young players. Sometimes that means playing them and taking some tough results. The experience they’ve gained this season will be invaluable to them though and Sarah has shown she is more than ready to step up when we’ve asked her to.
“Her second goal was an absolute screamer from outside the box, and Francesca also scored a great goal from distance.
“We pressed BSC really well and didn’t take our foot off the gas even when the result was already decided.
“We can take a huge amount of confidence from the game and hopefully it’s a sign of better things to come for us.”
