It’s not often that Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo and Saints fan favourite Ryan Flynn come up in the same conversation.
But St Mirren teenager Jay Henderson insists he looks up to both of them as he continues on the early stages of his fledgling professional career.
The talented 19-year-old bagged his first senior goal for the Buddies on Tuesday night, slamming the Paisley club into the lead against Dundee United.
Speaking after the match, his third consecutive start for the club, the Saints academy product revealed who his biggest inspirations have been so far.
And that brought Ryan Flynn and fellow forward Kyle McAllister into the mix with Manchester United legend Ronaldo as he looks to keep impressing his boss Jim Goodwin and keep his place in the Buddies starting XI.
Henderson told Express Sport: “I idolise people like Ronaldo.
“But, obviously, you look up to the boys like Flynny and even like McAllister, even though he’s only a few years older than me.
“They’ve set the example at this level, so I’m just trying to follow in their footsteps and try and make my way in the game.
“I know I’m a only a wee bit younger, so with the more minutes and experience I can get I just need to show what I can do.
“Especially to the gaffer and the club, I just need to keep helping the boys out and trying to get the wins and keep fighting for the top six.
“It has been hard for us, the boys have suffered a wee bit in the past 11 or so games.
“So to come back in the New Year and start fresh with a big win is good for the boys.”
