St Mirren goal of the season contenders assessed as Curtis Main and Mark O'Hara compete with two defenders

It’s fair to say St Mirren have scored some pretty beautiful goals this season.

And now the Paisley club are asking for Buddies to vote on which deserves to be crowned the best of the campaign.

To help you decide, we’ve had a look back at all seven nominees for the 2022/23 St Mirren goal of the season competition.

Saints fans can then head to www.stmirren.com to cast their vote for both their top goal pick and the St Mirren player of the year award.

Voting is open for both categories until 5pm on Friday May 12, with the winners set to be announced at the club’s awards dinner at the Normandy Hotel on Sunday, May 28.

Here are the St Mirren goal of the season nominees in full:

Goal 1 - Richard Tait vs Ross County

It’s been a frustrating campaign for the defender, who has spent the majority of the season sidelined with a serious injury.

The defender did make his mark early on with a wonderful curling effort against Ross County, which earned the Saints an important first win of the campaign.

Goal 2 - Curtis Main vs Dundee United

The Buddies striker has enjoyed one of his more prolific seasons up front this year, netting seven times so far in the Premiership.

The forward netted twice in the Paisley club’s impressive 3-0 away win against Dundee United, with his strike to put the Saints in control a well-taken effort.

Goal 3 - Ryan Strain vs Ross County

The Australian defender has been one of the signings of the season for St Mirren, making the right-back berth his own in Richard Tait’s injury-enforced absence.

The 26-year-old has netted three times in the stripes, with his first for the club a sublime free-kick against the Staggies that found the top corner from distance.

Goal 4 - Mark O’Hara vs St Johnstone

Saints midfielder Mark O’Hara has been a goal-scoring machine this season, netting 12 times in all competitions from the middle of the park.

This effort against St Johnstone was an absolute peach, with the stand-in skipper collecting Greg Kiltie’s clever knock down before volleying home an unstoppable effort high into the net.

Goal 5 - Curtis Main vs Aberdeen

Main certainly enjoyed his last trip to face his former employers at Pittodrie, netting a crucial brace as the Saints returned to Paisley with all three points after a confident 3-1 victory.

The striker’s first was a wonderfully crafted goal, with the Englishman taking a lovely touch in the box to collect Keanu Baccus’ cross before swivelling and firing low into the bottom corner.

Goal 6 - Curtis Main vs Hearts

The last in a hat-trick of nominations, Main’s latest goal for the Buddies was also a cracker.

The 30-year-old used all his strength to outmuscle Hearts defender Kye Rowles before smashing home a lovely left-footed effort into the bottom corner to set the Saints on their way to a vital 2-0 win in Edinburgh.

Goal 7 - Mark O’Hara vs Rangers

There haven’t been many tougher venues to score in Scotland than Ibrox this season but O’Hara made it look easy last month.

Just before half-time, the midfielder collected a deflected Greg Kiltie cross on his chest before blasting home a simply sensational volley into the top left corner - leaving keeper Allan McGregor both rooted and stunned.

Our verdict?

In my opinion it’s very difficult to pick between both of Mark O’Hara’s nominated strikes.

The effort against St Johnstone was so sweetly hit, but for me, the midfielder’s sublime goal against Rangers at Ibrox just edges its way to the front of the pack.

The first touch to tee himself up, as well as the level of opposition and difficulty of venue, puts that goal at the top of the pile.

The celebrations afterwards with the Saints fans in the away end also made it particularly memorable.
