Stephen Robinson is a major contender for the vacant Northern Ireland job.
The highly-rated St Mirren manager is very much in the thoughts of the Irish Football Association as they look to appoint a successor to Ian Baraclough who left his position earlier this week. The IFA board has already met to discuss replacements and Robinson has strong backing at that level, Record Sport understands.
The former Motherwell boss is also no stranger to the Northern Ireland set-up as he previously bossed their under-age groups and was also involved in coaching under Michael O’Neill at Euro 2016.The 47-year-old was also previously interviewed for the job before Baraclough but at that time Motherwell would have been due significant compensation. Robinson was headhunted by St Mirren from Morecambe last season. He has revamped his squad and taken the Buddies on a level. They are currently in the top six and before the recent break they were up as high as third and look set for a European push.
The IFA are looking to rebuild after a disastrous spell under Baraclough. Former Northern Ireland captain and Celtic manager Neil Lennon has also been linked after leaving Omonia Nicosia, as has Linfield boss David Healy, ex-Killie and women’s Northern Ireland boss chief Kenny Shiels and Jim Magilton, who has also coached under the IFA, have all been mentioned as potential runners and riders.
There is strong support for a return for Michael O’Neill but he has just left Stoke City and is unsure about returning for a second stint.
