Chaim Bloom is set to take over as the new President of Baseball Operations for the St. Louis Cardinals following the conclusion of the 2025 season, as announced by the team's CEO. Bloom will lead a revamp of the club's player development system next season before assuming the role from John Mozeliak, who is one of the longest-tenured heads of baseball operations in the MLB.
The Cardinals, who missed the postseason for the second consecutive year with an 83-79 record, have signed Bloom to a five-year deal. Bloom, previously with the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox, joined the Cardinals as an advisor last January.
Mozeliak, who has been with the Cardinals since 2007 and became President of Baseball Operations in 2017, expressed his support for bringing in Bloom to assess and guide the team's future direction.
Additionally, the Cardinals announced that general manager Mike Girsch will transition to the role of vice president of special projects, while farm director Gary LaRocque will serve as an advisor in 2025.
Ownership has approved significant investments in the team's development department, with a focus on empowering new leadership to enhance player development efforts.
On the field, the Cardinals are facing decisions regarding key players like Lance Lynn, Kyle Gibson, and Paul Goldschmidt, whose contracts are up for review. The team aims to balance financial considerations with the need for competitive performance.
The Cardinals saw a mix of performances from their young core players in the 2024 season, with emerging talents like Masyn Winn and Alec Burleson making significant contributions. However, challenges were faced with other young players, leading to adjustments in player placements and trades.
Looking ahead, the Cardinals are prioritizing investments in player development to ensure sustained competitiveness in the coming seasons.
