As the country enters a period of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II, the people of St Helens are paying their tributes.
The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral on Thursday, September 8, 2022, making her Britain's longest serving monarch. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. "
The UK, along with the rest of the Commonwealth, will now enter a ten day period of mourning. Tributes from across the borough of St Helens have begun to pour in.

The Leader of St Helens Borough Council, David Baines said in a statement: "The thoughts and prayers of everyone in St Helens Borough are with the Royal Family at this tragic time for them, and for us all.
"Throughout her entire life Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth provided leadership which defined post-war Britain. Through her outstanding and selfless public service she gave us stability and strength and was our one constant in an age which saw significant change in almost every other part of our lives.
"In the coming days and weeks we will mourn, and we will reflect on her remarkable life with awe and gratitude. May she rest in peace."
A book of condolence will be opened to the public at St Helens Town Hall reception, from today September 9, at 2pm, to allow people from across the borough to share their condolences. The Steve Prescott Bridge in St Helens is also lit up in purple to remember the reign of Queen Elizabeth.
Figures from the world of politics have also paid their respects. St Helens North MP Conor McGinn shared a tribute to social media, in a tweet he said: "The sad death of Her Majesty The Queen is deeply felt by all of us in St Helens. People in towns and villages across our borough will join the whole country in saluting a remarkable life of service, devotion, respect and duty. We send our condolences to the Royal Family."
St Helens South MP, Marie Rimmer said: “Queen Elizabeth II was an ever-present of our national story for decades. The country has undergone great change over that time. The Queen was always there with a tireless work effort and grace.
"Her dedication to our country and its people was unshakeable. Nobody displayed dignity and duty quite let her. May her life be an example to us all. When she unexpectedly became Queen at such a young age, she declared that she will be devoted to our service for her whole life, whether it was long or short. Queen Elizabeth II fulfilled that noble and honourable promise."
