When Squid Game arrived on Netflix in 2021, a surprise star was born. The Korean series’ gruesome premise shocked the world and quickly snowballed into a record-breaking global success. Amassing 265.2 million views within the first 91 days of its release, the dystopian TV phenomenon became Netflix’s biggest ever series launch, also becoming the streaming platform’s most popular non-English language show.
Squid Game then took the awards season by storm too, collecting 14 Emmy nominations, and winning six awards. These included wins for cast lead Lee Jung-jae and Hwang Dong-Hyuk for directing.
