Spotify Wrapped reveals Ireland's 2022 listening habits

Spotify Wrapped is finally out - with listeners worldwide getting insights on their top musical preferences.

The highly anticipated list gives app users access to their most listened to songs, artists, albums and podcasts from the end of 2021 through to October 31 2022. The concept has spread like wildfire on social media, and music lovers across Ireland are no exception.

Some of Ireland’s top Spotify artists in previous years include Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Drake and Justin Bieber. Taylor has retained her crown in Ireland for the second year running as the most streamed artist, following the commercial success of her new album “Midnights.”

Globally, Taylor triumphed as the second most viral artist on Spotify. Other entries that topped both Irish and international playlists include Harry Styles, who’s summer hit “As it Was” ranked top of the most streamed songs on the platform.

Ed Sheeran was another firm favourite on the list, with his new album = coming fourth on the top five most streamed albums globally.

Nostalgia also featured in the data, with many throwback songs cropping up in the results. The 90s hit “Gangsta’s Paradise” saw a resurgence following the death of US rapper Coolio this autumn. Additionally, Kate Bush’s 80s hit ‘Running Up that Hill’ experienced a global rebirth following the song’s use in Netflix series ‘Stranger Things.’

The impact the nostalgic song had on the younger generation was clear here in Ireland, as Kate Bush’s hit song dethroned Harry Styles from his No. 1 spot on the Irish charts . The hit only ranked fourth in Ireland during its original release back in 1985.

The end of Covid-19 restrictions also had an impact on the platform, as there was a 620% increase in in demand for wedding content on the platform. Spotify’s own “Country Wedding” playlist skyrocketed in early spring.
