'Split ticketing' train hack could get passengers cheaper journeys

Those who use the train for long journeys might be missing out on savings which can be made by 'splitting' their tickets.

When travelling by train, splitting the journey - or 'split ticketing' - can often save money, particularly on longer routes. Instead of buying one single ticket, travellers can buy multiple tickets to cover the component parts.

For example, if you were to travel from Edinburgh to Oban on the morning of February 8 you could reduce your ticket by £6.60 through splitting, according to Trainline.

Instead of booking direct to Oban, you would instead book an off-peak leaving from Edinburgh at 11.15 to Queen Street and then an any-time ticket from Glasgow Queen Street at 12.22 to Oban.

It would cost you £42.20, as opposed to the £48.80 that it would cost if you bought a direct ticket, and will take four hours and 12 minutes in total - including a 15 minute layover at Queen Street.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Money Expert, said: "Soaring rail fares and uncertainty around fuel prices is a real concern for millions of people who rely on cars and public transport, especially as many are already feeling the impact of the cost of living crisis.

"However, there are steps that consumers can take to lower their spending and save money on their commute."

The money-saving experts also recommend always booking in advance while using a railcard as it can help you save money on journeys. And despite saving you cash without impacting your journey, split ticketing is completely legal and is allowed by the National Conditions of Travel under which all train companies operate, explains Trainline.

Websites such as the Trainline and Tickety Split can help find split routes, according to the experts at Which?.
