Phil Lord and Chris Miller kept it pretty cryptic when revealing that they were indeed offered a live-action movie in the Spider-Man universe.
"Yes," Miller said on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast. When asked whether it was the main MCU or a spin-off, Miller simply replied, "You know, you know." As to whether or not the film came close to entering production or if it just didn't pan out, Miller said, "As you know, we love Spider-Man. We're fans of the character and the world. We'll leave it at that."
Because Sony is the main studio behind the Spider-Verse movies, I can only imagine that "spin-off" refers to a potential live-action movie taking place in the Sony Spider-Man Universe. This is, of course, the same universe that gave us Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter, and Morbius (though it did also give us the delightful Tom Hardy-led Venom trilogy).
If a live-action Miles Morales movie does finally materialize, it would probably make the most sense for it to be under the Sony banner... though the Spider-Verse movies are (sort of) canon to the MCU. We don't know exactly what Lord and Miller were referring to, and we may not know for quite some time.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is scheduled to release on June 18, 2027, some three years after its original 2024 release date.
