Spice Girl Mel C hits out at Tories' 'flipping disgrace' plans for the economy

Spice Girl Mel C has said the Tories’ handling of the economy is a “flipping disgrace”.

The pop star warned that people around the country are “desperate” as they struggle to make ends meet.

“I think any person with any morals can see what's going on isn't right,” she said.

Speaking on Times Radio at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, Mel C revealed she declined to have her photograph taken with the PM at a recent event.

She said: “It's a very difficult time, as we all know, in the UK right now and I come from an area of the UK where lots of people struggle financially.

"I try not to be political but in all honesty it's a flipping disgrace.

“You're talking about the bankers getting their bonuses.

"I'm in a very privileged position, I can't get up on my high horse and start saying things, but I think any person with any morals can see what's going on isn't right.

“I think we all feel just so worn out by it all and it concerns me what's going to happen. People are desperate, what is going to happen?”

Mel C and Geri Horner both attended the Uefa Women's Euro 2022 final at Wembley Stadium in July.

Ms Truss, who was also at the match, posed for a photograph with Mrs Horner, but there was no picture of her with her fellow bandmate.

It comes as Liz Truss is set to be told by warring Cabinet ministers that she must ditch her plan to snatch money from 5.6million people on Universal Credit.

The PM wants to break a promise made by Boris Johnson to increase payments in line with inflation next April - a rise of about 10%.

But ministers will warn her at a showdown meeting on Tuesday that she will be defeated by her own MPs if she attempts to push ahead.

Some backbench Conservatives have already voiced fears to Labour - who will be looking in detail at how they could block any benefit cut once Parliament returns on Tuesday.

With Tory anger already at fever pitch weeks before any decision, a Truss ally told the Sunday Times: “She's beginning to realise it will never get through”.

The Child Poverty Action Group says 200,000 more children will be pushed into poverty if benefits only rise in line with earnings - about 5%.
