Since its illumination on July 4, 2023, the Las Vegas Sphere has become a prominent platform for various promotions, ranging from entertainment events like 'Trolls Band Together' and 'The Marvels' to major spectacles such as the Super Bowl and U2's recent residency at the venue. Now, Sphere Entertainment Co. is offering students a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity through the Sphere XO Student Design Challenge.
The collaboration between Sphere, the Clark County School District, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, aims to engage students from the local community in designing content for the impressive 580,000-square-foot LED exosphere of the Las Vegas Sphere. The Challenge invites students from elementary school through college to submit their artwork for consideration.
A panel consisting of both public voters and a jury comprising acclaimed artists Refik Anadol and Michela Picchi will select eight winners from the submissions. The winning designs will be featured on the exosphere starting on July 4, providing a unique platform for the students' artistic expressions.
High school and UNLV student winners will be awarded a $10,000 educational scholarship by Sphere, while elementary and middle school winners will receive a $10,000 donation for their school's art program. Additionally, the winning students and their schools will be treated to 'The Sphere Experience,' which includes a special screening of Darren Aronofsky's 'Postcard From Earth.'
Brenda Larsen-Mitchell, the interim superintendent of schools in the Clark County School District, emphasized the importance of arts education in public schools and expressed gratitude for Sphere's commitment to supporting the local community through initiatives like the XO Student Design Challenge. Larsen-Mitchell highlighted the value of hands-on learning and innovation in art for students participating in the Challenge.
Looking ahead, the Las Vegas Sphere is set to host upcoming shows by popular bands Phish and Dead & Company, further solidifying its position as a premier entertainment venue in the region.
