SPFL faces FIFA loan restriction as clubs given new limit on temporary transfers

SPFL clubs will be allowed just six loans in or out by 2024 as FIFA announces a shake-up of the temporary transfer system.

Clubs in Scotland frequently dip into the loan market as a cheaper alternative to outright transfers, with a total of 40 incoming loans in the Premiership this season.

Teams also commonly move players out temporarily further down the pyramid or to outside leagues.

Premiership champions Rangers currently have 10 players out on loan and Celtic eight - not including the released Leigh Griffiths who had been at Dundee on a season-long deal.

That situation will not be allowed under new regulations though as FIFA looks to crack down on clubs hoarding players.

From July 1 this year clubs will be allowed only eight players in or out on loan. That drops to seven from 2023 and down to six the following July.

However, that does not mean young players will miss out on development opportunities as the rules will not apply to under 21s or club-trained players.

There will also be a limitation on loans between clubs, capped at three, and a maximum loan duration of one year.

FIFA say the rules are designed to develop young players, promote competitive balance and stop the hoarding of players.

The last issue has been highlighted in recent years - as an example Chelsea have 21 players out on loan and Juventus an incredible 39.
