Speeding fines to double following increase in road fatalities

Speeding fines are set to double following a spike in road deaths over the weekend.

Speeding fines will now cost offenders €160 instead of €80, while drivers caught using their mobile phones will now be charged €120 as opposed to €60. Fines for failing to wear a seatbelt will also be doubled under the changes.

Minister of State for Transport Hildegarde Naughton confirmed the fines would be introduced in an attempt to curb road deaths before the August Bank Holiday weekend. “We’re asking people to act responsibly, particularly over the bank holiday weekend, to expect the unexpected and slow down,” the Minister told Newstalk Breakfast.
