Speed bump calls in Colwick where crash into boundary wall was 'waiting to happen'

People on a Colwick road where the boundary walls of two homes were destroyed in a crash say that speed bumps are needed to stop more accidents. Nottinghamshire Police issued a warning after issuing pictures showing significant damage to a car and a van following the collision on Chaworth Road at around 2pm on Monday (October 24).

Chaworth Road lies just round the corner from Vale Road, with residents reporting that the whole stretch is being used as a "rat run" for people driving around the Colwick Loop Road. Two people were treated for minor injuries at the scene of Monday's crash and police told drivers to take extra care.

But people living along the road think that more safety measures are needed following the accident that was "waiting to happen." Andor Bánfi, 37, who has lived on Chaworth Road for five years, said: "It is always quite busy all the way along the road and there does seem to be speeding, particularly at night, so speed bumps could help with that.

"There are a lot of people living on the road who have children as well so I think it is something they're obviously worried about. It's just very busy with people using this as a shortcut."

A woman who lives in one of the homes that had its boundary wall smashed in Monday's crash, who did not want to be named, said: "I was out the back of the house when it happened. I heard this big thud and ran out here and saw what had happened.

"They crashed into an AA van and that flew up the other end of the road when it was hit. You do get problems with speeding and it was an accident waiting to happen."

Ralitsa Karakoleva, 36, said: "It's not every day that there is speeding, it just depends, but it can happen at night and in the daytime. A speed bump could stop people from doing it.

"There is so much traffic down the road and there are always parked cars which makes it difficult to see where you are going. They should do something about it."

Chris Smith, 56, is the joint owner of Joe's Cafe and Cob Shop on Chaworth Road, and says that he has had vehicles written off in the past. He said: "One of the things it needs is some sort of barrier to stop people pulling out on traffic because I have had loads of near misses pulling into the street.

"But speed bumps and cameras could work as well because speeding is a problem. I've had two vans totally written off here before and it's so busy with the traffic because this is a rat run for people from Netherfield.

"It's been bad for a while now. It can often be very dangerous and we could end up with a really serious accident if something isn't done."

Nottinghamshire County Council says it has already implemented several safety measures along Vale Road, with Chaworth Road occupying a very small stretch just round the corner from it. But the authority says it is always monitoring roads to look for contributing factors to accidents.

Gary Wood, the Head of Highways and Transport at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: "We take road safety very seriously and have consistently invested in highway improvements to reduce accidents on Nottinghamshire’s roads. A number of features have already been implemented on Vale Road, including an interactive speed sign, children warning signage, cyclist warning signage, 20mph school zone as well as yellow backed flashing 20mph signage incorporating ‘children warning’ signage.

"Our Safer Highways Team monitor all roads in Nottinghamshire, including Vale Road, to look for patterns in the factors contributing to accidents and where appropriate, develop new schemes to reduce these in the future. Alongside our highways partner, Via East Midlands, we deliver road safety education and training for all types of road users at all ages.

We also support a number of local and national road safety initiatives and campaigns, including those around reducing speeding. “Residents can report traffic issues to us through our ‘Make a new highways request’ website page. Where speeding does occur, it is an enforceable offence and tickets are issued by Nottinghamshire Police."
