'Spectacular' aurora in Scotland captured as star trails zip above Isle of Lewis

A photographer visiting the Isle of Lewis has shared images of the Northern Lights and star trails above the island in photos have been called "spectacular".

Jason Spinks captured the stunning photographs on Boxing Day. They are suitably wintery — a thick sheet of snow can be seen covering the ground and the roofs of nearby buildings.

An aurora is a natural light display that shimmers in the sky. Most are green in colour, though sometimes hints of pink, red, violet, and white can be seen. Spinks' photos show a gorgeous mix of pink, green, and yellow in the skies over Lewis.

Star trails, meanwhile, refer to a type of photograph that uses long exposure times to capture the apparent movement of stars in the night sky. In one of Spinks' images, the stars create a dazzling pattern against the colourful backdrop of the aurora.

He has since shared the photographs onto the Scotland from the Roadside Facebook page, writing: "Aurora, snow, and star trails! Isle of Lewis on Boxing Day night."

Before long, the post had racked up hundreds of likes, as well as comments. Fellow Facebook users were keen to share their thoughts on the breathtaking images.
