Special school children praised for returning wedding gift found in the street

Kind hearted pupils at a West Belfast special school have been praised for returning a wedding card and cash which they found on the street.

The pupils from St Gerard's School on Blacks Road found the card and cash while they were returning to school after a visit to a local supermarket with their teacher.

Working together, they brainstormed ideas on how they could track down the happy couple.

"First of all we didn't realise there was any money in it," their teacher Mark Knipe told Belfast Live.

"Their first idea was to put a notice up to say that we had found the money but then we thought that it might blow down.

"When we got back to school, someone came up with the clever idea that if it was a wedding and there was money in the card then chances are it was for a wedding that day."

Mark said that the pupils then took it upon themselves to go onto Google and find the phone numbers of local hotels to ask if they were hosting a wedding that day.

"One of the students rang the Balmoral Hotel and they confirmed that the wedding was there so everyone was delighted that they were able to return it.

"It was one of those moments that you had to be there to enjoy and it is just such a great sign of the spirit in the school.

"They are so generous in giving to these kids and the ingenuity to be able to think of ideas on how to get it back, I am so proud of them. They are amazing kids."

Telling us how they found the card, one of the pupils. Conor said when he picked up the envelope and opened it to see who it belonged to, money fell out.

"We decided to bring it back to the school and try to find them so we came up with some ideas and Eamonn called the Balmoral to see if there was a wedding on.

"We were a bit surprised because it is not everyday you find an envelope with money in it.

"We worked as a class to find out who owned it and were relieved when we found them."

Eamonn added: "We brought the money over to the hotel reception and left it there. Finding the couple was pretty hard for a bit with calling round all the hotels but we found them at the Balmoral.

"We were happy that we found the people who owned it."
