Special election in NY's third congressional district too close to call

Republican congressional candidate for New York's 3rd district, Mazi Melesa Pilip votes in Massapequa, New York

Voters in New York's third congressional district, located just outside of New York City, are currently participating in a special election to fill the seat left vacant by indicted and expelled Republican George Santos. This closely watched race between Republican Mozzie Pillup and Democrat Tom Suozzi could provide insights into the 2024 general election and potentially impact the balance of power in the House of Representatives.

The district, which includes parts of Nassau County and Queens, is considered a crucial battleground. Despite being a suburban area that favored President Joe Biden by eight points in the 2020 election, Republican candidate George Santos managed to defeat his Democratic opponent by seven points in 2022. As a result, both parties are actively campaigning in the hopes of winning this pivotal race.
