THE National has published a 12-page special edition paper in partnership with the Aberdeen Independence Movement (AIM) to set out a tailored case for independence.
AIM will work with other Yes-supporting groups in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire to deliver the 100,000 copies to households – winning over more voters ahead of indyref2.
This special edition is focused on key issues in the North East of Scotland such as farming, fishing and energy.
The 12-page publication, supported by the Scottish Independence Foundation, features exclusive pieces from local voices, including Dick Winchester, Emma North, Dr Mary Brown, Green MSP Maggie Chapman and SNP MSP Karen Adams.
Alan Petrie, organiser of the Aberdeen Independence Movement, said: “A very different case for independence is needed in the North East. The messaging is different and that is why we need to produce materials with a detailed focus on issues affecting people here – like this publication.”
In the past week, the group has welcomed five new volunteers. Petrie said there is a definite uptake in people discussing independence, across parties.
The activist also encouraged other groups to consider creating their own specific and tailored materials.
He said: “We want this to be a model for Yes groups. This is the biggest project by a local group, but we don’t want it to be the only project. We’re sort of saying if we can do it, anyone can.”
The National’s deputy editor Stewart Ward said: “We’re so pleased by this collaboration with the AIM – they’ve put together a range of articles extremely tailored to winning over the hearts of voters in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire that have not yet completed their journey to Yes.”
“This was a chance to use their knowledge of the area and our production, print and distribution experience to make money go as far as possible in campaigning for an independent Scotland. Full credit goes to our print centre, too, for the fantastic job they’ve done with huge jobs such as this and our one million paper project.
“This latest offering builds on that and our collaboration with Manniefest that produced a Highlands and Islands special edited by Lesley Riddoch.
“The National is a resource for Yes groups to draw on – the movement faces overwhelming opposition in the press, but thanks to the support of our readers and subscribers, we can connect you with the logistical operation of a mainstream newspaper group to spread your message as far as possible.”
AIM will also be manning a stall at Castlegate with copies available there on Saturday.
