Special day held to celebrate diversity in grassroots sports

Celebrating diversity in sport is the National Sporting Heritage's theme for 2022. Held on September 30, the annual event is used to champion all sporting heritage here in Wales.

Organisers of the day hope to see people celebrate their sport, their sporting heritage and the stories and collections that come from it. Beginning in 2014 with just a handful of activities available, it has grown considerably ever since its initial celebration.

In Wales, many inclusive based grassroots teams are getting involved with the celebrations, including Cardiff Baseliners, an inclusive LGBT+ tennis club which was founded this year. “I really want to build on the fantastic inclusive sports clubs we have already in Wales, and getting more people interested in tennis at the same time is a bonus. I’m really excited," Neil Roberts, founder of the Cardiff Baseliners said.

"I’m hoping everyone who comes to it, be they beginners or seasoned players recognise that it’s a safe space for them to enjoy and play tennis, without barriers. When people feel they’re seen and heard, they build better connections and thrive."

Simon Johnson, CEO of Tennis Wales, said: “This National Sporting Heritage Day, we’re proud to be looking at the past of Welsh tennis – while also looking to the future and celebrating those, like the Cardiff Baseliners, who are making history.

“We encourage tennis communities across Wales to share their own tennis memories, whether that be photos of their local club from 50 years ago, or a trophy from five years ago.”

Cardiff Baseliners is being led by local player Neil Roberts, who is passionate about providing opportunities for other LGBTQ+ people to play socially and access coaching in the city. Since opening, the club has formed a partnership with one of Cardiff’s most well-known LGBT+ venues – The Golden Cross – and has developed a dedicated committee featuring many of the regular players. They’re also planning to develop their own tournament.
