Sparkle on: should you ever risk glitter make-up products near your eyes?

Sparkly make-up is eye-catching, but you don’t want it to catch in your eye - (Getty Images)

My TikTok algorithm this party season has not been immune to the viral glitter mascara topcoat trend — specifically one that promises to be volumising and thickening as well as making lashes look longer and, yes: adding sparkle to my lashes. It was sold out for weeks before I finally managed to get my hands on it.

But planning my make-up look for New Years Eve and beyond, I’m suddenly became hesitant to try it out. Where I once applied glitter all around my eyes with abandon, I’ve had enough run-ins with stray sparkles to make me fear for my eye health. If it’s ending up all over my pillow, then surely it’s sneaking it’s way into my eyeballs. And as someone who ditches the glasses for contact lenses on a night out, the risk for a glitter-based incident is heightened. The idea is to look eye-catching — not catch anything in my eyes.
