Spanish shoppers are using pineapples at the supermarket to search for love – the craze explained

A trend in Spain that encourages singles to look for spouses in supermarkets by using a code based on fruit has resulted in some tumultuous scenes, to the point where the police have been summoned to restore order.

Claims that single Spaniards can find romance between 7pm and 8pm in Mercadona supermarkets have attracted a lot of single people in recent days, especially if they put an upside-down pineapple in their shopping carts.

Actor and humourist Vivy Lin is mostly responsible for the phenomenon; on TikTok, she shared a video of herself driving a tram through a Mercadona store while discussing the purported window.

She says in Spanish: “The time to hook up in Mercadona is 7pm to 8pm.”

The pineapple manoeuvre is reportedly finished by pushing your cart into the store's wine department in the hope someone you think attractive will react favourably. The tale has gone viral, resulting in some strange and occasionally chaotic visuals.

An inverted pineapple has previously been used as a code. Traditionally, it has been used to facilitate the finding of individuals who are interested in swinging, or trading sexual partners.

Although some people may have enjoyed the fruit's most recent use, there have been reports that many Mercadona staff members do not share the company's enthusiasm for the pineapple craze.

Workers in the northern Spanish city of Bilbao reported that a group of enthusiastic singles formed a flash mob and "overwhelmed" a Mercadona store.

When police arrived, the crowd immediately dispersed, and nobody was taken into custody during the event.

According to news website Olive Press, clues regarding someone's intentions can be found in other goods in their trolley. For instance, seeing chocolates or other sweets indicates that the person is seeking a committed relationship or something more serious. However, the magazine claims that a lettuce or legume indicates that they are searching for something more informal.
