Spain warning to UK holidaymakers as extreme weather to strike

A warning has been issued to UK holidaymakers travelling to Spain as extreme weather is set to hit the country.

According to experts, Spain is set to have an "extremely hot" summer on the horizon.

Meteorological agency of Spain AEMET has said there will be a "high probability" that there will be a hotter-than-normal summer on the way, Birmingham Live reports.

It comes not long after the country has been battling a severe drought.

NASA say Spain received 28 percent less rain than expected by mid-May 2023, according to Spain’s meteorological agency.

The drought led to water restrictions across the popular holiday destination.

Rubén Del Campo, a spokesperson for AEMET, said the latest data showed a continuation of the extremely high temperatures the country suffered last year, which was the hottest year ever recorded in Spain, reports Birmingham Live.

He said: "We can say that [summer] will be among the hottest in recent decades."

The heat has already been building in Spain after the country registered its hottest spring on record as well as its second driest.

Del Campo added: "We are already getting used to records, March and April were very warm, and May was normal.

"This year is the second warmest spring in the historical series. Surface water temperatures recorded in 2022 were the highest since at least 1940."

Meanwhile, Estrella Gutiérrez, also from AEMET, explained that this summer could produce more rainfall than previous years.

Last summer, a heatwave saw temperatures across Spain hit as high as 40C.
