Spain travel warning as easyJet strikes begin this week at holiday hotspots

People travelling to Spain this month have been issued a warning as easyJet strikes in the country are set to begin this week.

EasyJet is one of the most popular airlines that operates in the country, flying out of many holiday hotspots. However, cabin crew will be staging industrial action on a number of days this month over working conditions.

After negotiations failed, easyJet workers will strike in three-day batches, starting on August 12, 13 and 14. Strikes will continue from August 19 to 21 and will take place again from August 27 to August 29.

The strikes are most likely to affect the airline's bases at Malaga, Barcelona, and Palma de Mallorca airports. However, the industrial action may have a knock-on effect at other airports in the country.

The Spanish Union of Airline Pilots (SEPLA) stated: "This is the last possible recourse, as all attempts by the pilots’ representatives to reach an agreement have failed."

Speaking to Reuters, easyJet expressed disappointment in the decision and stated that talks were ongoing. The airline added that it was aware of pilot strikes at its bases in Barcelona, Malaga and Palma.

It follows the news that Ryanair staff in Spain may strike for as many as four days each week. This may last until January 2023, though Ryanair has stated that it expects minimal disruption.

In response to the airline strikes, the UK Government's travel guidance for Spain now reads: "Possible strike action may cause some disruption to flights to and from Spain. You should consult your airline for updates prior to travel."
