Rangers fans and other holidaymakers going to Spain might be second guessing the passport validity rules.
Thousands of tourists are pouring into Seville for the Europa League final as the Rangers face off against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday.
Passport rules have been confusing since Brexit and they've even stumped some airlines who have turned fliers away for wrongly imposing rules that don't exist.
Travellers should check the rules and their documents to avoid getting turned away by border agents.
The UK Foreign Office recently issued a clarification on passport validity rules for countries including Spain.
The new advice reads: "If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must follow the Schengen area passport requirements."
"Your passport must be:
- issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country (check the 'date of issue')
- valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave (check the 'expiry date')"
"You must check your passport meets these requirements before you travel. If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date."
Spain passport rules - or how much time you need on your passport
The Schengen Area is made up of 26 countries that share the same border policies.
Countries within this zone require passports to be no more than 10 years old from the point of issue.
However, most EU countries also require your passport to be valid for at least three months after your date of travel.
The UK Foreign Office says:
- Check that your passport has been issued less than 10 years before the date you enter Spain (check the 'date of issue')
- Passports should be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave Spain (check the 'expiry date')
- Check your passport before heading to the airport
- If your passport was issued before October 1, 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date
In other words, holidaymakers should check their passports are less than 10 years old before entering Spain.
Additionally, the validity rule means that there must be three months left on a passport after the day travellers leave Spain.
It comes as Spanish police estimate 100,000 Rangers fans will be in Seville for the Europa final.
In a tweet on Sunday, Glasgow Airport warned passengers that things will be busy over the next few days due to football fans travelling.
The airport has asked fliers for patience and to arrive on time and pre-book parking and lounges.
