Spain-based easyJet staff to strike jeopardising summer holidays amid travel chaos

Cabin crew for easyJet based in Spain are planning to go on strike for nine days in July.

The calls for action comes as the local USO union are demanding higher pay. The strike could see further travel chaos as the airline has already been struggling with staffing issues, leading to hundreds of cancellations.

According to Reuters, cabin staff in Spain will walk out July 1-3, 15-17, and 29-31 as easyJet's flight attendants in Spain are demanding a 40 per cent increase on their basic salaries, Miguel Galan general secretary of USO's easyJet section has said.

Currently, the basic salary sits at 950 euros (around £775).

The walk out would mean staff will stop working at easyJet’s bases in Barcelona, Málaga and Palma.

Galan said: "The company underestimated the outlook, was more pessimistic and conservative and is not ready for the demand… this generates a domino effect on us."

A spokesperson for easyJet told EdinburghLive: “easyJet has been advised of strike action by its cabin crew based in Spain between 1-3, 15-17, and 29-31 July at its bases in Barcelona, Malaga, and Palma. We are extremely disappointed with this action as we have made considerable progress towards a new CLA and so would like to continue the constructive dialogue with them.

“Should the industrial action go ahead there could be some disruption to our flying programme to and from Malaga, Palma and Barcelona during the strike period but at this stage, easyJet plans to operate its full schedule and we would like to reassure customers that we will do everything possible to minimise any disruption.”

This comes as Ryanair staff also planned to strike in June and July over pay and working conditions.

Over the recent months, travellers have had their plans thrown in chaos after being faced with cancellations and delays.
