Space weather a growing risk for air traffic

A software safety fault that forced the grounding of dozens of passenger planes across Australia has been branded by experts as "a warning shot for the future".

The glitch was triggered by space weather, a phenomenon increasingly impacting next-generation aircraft electronics and not a one-off, according to Australian researchers.

Ninety flights were cancelled and the travel plans of 15,000 Jetstar customers upended in November when airlines around the world were told to urgently ground their Airbus A320 aircraft.
