Souza: Tottenham confirm second January signing in £13m deal

New boy: Souza - (Tottenham Hotspur)

Tottenham have announced the signing of Souza from Santos as Thomas Frank welcomes his second addition of the January transfer window.

Standard Sport understands that the young left-back has joined for a fee in the region of £13million.

The 19-year-old will compete with Destiny Udogie for a starting berth in the back four.

The north Londoners had an initial £8m bid turned down by the Brazilian side, but struck an agreement at the second time of asking.

Souza completed a medical earlier this week and could be available to make his Spurs debut against Burnley on Saturday should Spurs get international clearance.

The teenager will compete with Udogie for first-team minutes, allowing Djed Spence to move back to right-back and rival Pedro Porro on that side.

Souza played 24 times for Santos’ senior side in his debut season, having graduated from the club’s youth set-up.

It was believed that Souza had a €100m (£87.1m) release clause in his contract with the Brazilian club.

“It’s an incredible feeling to join a really big club in Spurs,” Souza told the Spurs website.

“I grew up watching the Premier League so this is a childhood dream for me and I can’t wait to get going.

“This is a big step in my development. The Premier League is very different to what I’m used to in Brazil, and I’m really looking forward to this challenge and to being part of the squad here.”

Spurs head coach Thomas Frank said of Souza’s signing: “I’m really pleased to add Souza to our squad. He is a talented, promising young full-back, who is forward-thinking and technically very good.

“I’m looking forward to working with him and helping developing that potential, as we believe we have bought one of the brightest left-back talents in the world, who can give us something now but also for the future.”

The youngster follows Conor Gallagher through the door, and takes Spurs’ outlay for January to around £48m.

Spurs moved quickly for the midfielder, beating Aston Villa to the former Chelsea man’s signature.

Frank had been keen to bring in another body to his engine room, after Rodrigo Bentancur was ruled out for three months with a hamstring injury.
