Southwark flat fire: Police investigation after man dies in blaze

A man has died after a fire broke out in a third floor flat in Southwark.

Firefighters were called shortly after 5am on Wednesday to the blaze on King James Street.

A  man died at the scene while a second resident was rescued by crews from the building, the London Fire Brigade said.

The Met Police and the LFB are investigating how the fire broke out.

A further four people left the building before firefighters arrived.

Six fire engines and around 40 firefighters responded to the fire and the three room flat was destroyed.

Firefighters from Dockhead, Old Kent Road, Soho and surrounding fire stations attended the scene and the blaze was under control by 7.18am. 

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at approximately 05:00hrs on Wednesday, 4 September to reports of a fire at a flat in King James Street,SE1.“London Fire Brigade attended and dealt with the blaze. A man – no further details – was pronounced dead at the scene.“There are no reports of any other injuries. Enquiries into the cause of the fire remain ongoing.”
