In a significant victory for historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), Southern University's baseball team pulled off a remarkable upset against LSU, the defending national champion. The game, held at Alex Box Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, marked only the sixth win by an HBCU against a Division I top-level opponent since 2020.

This victory holds great importance for HBCU baseball programs as it showcases the rising level of play and coaching at these institutions. Michael Coker, a seasoned HBCU baseball writer, emphasized that such wins attract talented players who may not have considered attending an HBCU otherwise.
