The National Weather Service office in Las Vegas has placed Southern Nevada and much of the surrounding Mojave Desert region under an Extreme Heat Watch running from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 8 p.m. Friday. Forecasters expect highs of 115 to 118 degrees through Death Valley and the lower Colorado River Valley, with readings between 107 and 110 degrees elsewhere in the watch area. The Las Vegas Valley is forecast to be in the 103 to 107-degree range through midweek.
The watch reaches beyond Clark County into southern Nye County in Nevada, northwest Arizona, including Mohave County, and southeast California, covering Death Valley National Park in Inyo County and part of San Bernardino County. That is a large stretch of desert with dispersed housing, long drives to hospitals, and a summer workforce that spends much of the day outdoors.
