Southeastern, eastern KY wildfires all contained; out-of-state crews headed home for Thanksgiving

The wildfires in southeastern and eastern Kentucky that led state officials to call on help from several other states are all out or under control. That’s the word from Steve Kull, with the state Division of Forestry. He said a little rain Friday and Saturday and plenty more Tuesday helped firefighters a lot.

“We still have something to work on. But there are no more or what we would consider active. They were all had containment lines around them, and there was no fear that they were going to spread out of those lines.”

At one point, firefighters from the state Division of Forestry and their counterparts from other states were battling more than 60 wildfires. Kull said the assist from Mother Nature will help nearly all the out-of-state crews make it home in time for Thanksgiving.

“A few of them will have late Thanksgiving dinner. I don't know that they'll be home early on Thanksgiving or be there on Thursday. But they've got some crew still scheduled to go out of here Thursday morning. Hopefully they'll have Thanksgiving dinner by Friday for sure.”

Tuesday afternoon, Kull said the fires still burning all had containment lines and there was no fear they were going to spread.
