During Hurricane Helene, hospitals and health care organizations in the Southeast faced significant challenges while striving to provide essential care for their communities. The massive storm caused widespread damage to the region's health centers, resulting in blackouts, wind damage, supply shortages, and flooding.

Despite the adversities, most hospitals managed to stay operational by utilizing generators or backup systems to power their facilities. While some elective procedures were postponed, very few facilities had to close entirely.

Health care providers and communities are now in the recovery phase, with efforts focused on restoring normalcy. In western North Carolina, where numerous lives were lost, health care workers are still unaccounted for, and mental health care facilities have been destroyed.

UNC Health Appalachian's facilities were fully stocked with supplies and on backup power during the storm. However, communication challenges arose post-hurricane, with a significant percentage of staff remaining unaccounted for.

Community health centers in western North Carolina suffered severe damage, impacting their ability to provide essential primary and mental health care services to the community. The aftermath of the storm raises concerns about the continuity of care for individuals reliant on medications and treatments.

Efforts are underway to restore normalcy, with hospitals in South Carolina regaining power and reopening. In North Carolina, the majority of acute care hospitals have had their grid power restored, allowing them to resume operations.

Despite the challenges faced, hospitals in Florida's Gulf Coast and panhandle were well-prepared for the storm, with only a few requiring evacuation. In Georgia, health care centers dealt with high-speed winds, necessitating emergency measures to ensure patient safety.

The impact of Hurricane Helene serves as a reminder of the resilience and preparedness required within the health care sector to navigate natural disasters effectively.
