The defeat makes it 13 losses in 16 Premier League games for Southampton. Last year’s Championship playoff winners looked devoid of confidence and out of idea, and are now nine points from safety.

For Tottenham, it was a much-needed shot in the arm after some disappointing results of their own.

Thursday’s Europa League draw against Rangers at Ibrox did little to lift spirits, but this convincing win certainly will have done.
