Southampton 0-1 Newcastle United player ratings: Nick Pope the main man yet again

Newcastle United hold a 1-0 lead going into the second leg of the League Cup semi-finals against Southampton.

On a night in which Joelinton had the ball in the net during the first half his effort he could only watch on as it was chalked off for a handball while Sean Longstaff had a penalty appeal knocked back for a trip. But even after missing a sitter after the break, Joelinton redeemed himself with the winner.

Joe Willock has had two clear sights of goal but blazed over on the South Coast. United won't complain too much about the way the tie has unfolded but this is there for them if they want it badly enough.

Here's how the players rated overall on the South Coast:

Nick Pope 9

Pretty much a spectator for much of the first half apart from save to push over Alcaraz effort. Where would United be without his saves after the break?

Kieran Trippier 8

An industrious first half. Hauled his team through the game

Fabian Schar 8

Bounced back from a knee problem early on to help secure another clean sheet. Big part in the winner.

Sven Botman 8

Another comfortable display as he cleared his line effectively.

Dan Burn 8

Another solid display from the Blyth lad. Barely beaten in the tackle.

Sean Longstaff 7

Felt he should have had a penalty. Another decent display.

Joe Willock 6

A tough night with two big chances blazed over. Put in a shift throughout but could not find the finish when he needed it most.

Bruno Guimaraes 8

Another brilliant display as he ran the show in the middle. Pipped to man of the match by Pope.

Joelinton 7

Redeemed himself after horror miss with vital winning goal.

Miguel Almiron 7

Much better after the break. Caused the Saints problems.

Callum Wilson 6

A quiet night as the goal drought continues. Just one shot on target and 15 touches, badly needs a tap in.

Subs

Allan Saint-Maximin 7 (for Willock 68)

A thorn in the Saints' side.

Isak 8 (for Wilson 68)

The game change for the Magpies. A great cross for Joelinton.
