A review is to be held into how a job regrading for South Lanarkshire home carers is to be implemented.
It follows a successful appeal that led to the post being enhanced to the same hourly rate as staff working in residential homes.
The huge equal pay victory means an increase in hourly pay for home carers by at least £3 an hour to at least £16.24 after GMB Scotland joined other trade unions to fight the council’s initial decision to refuse the carers equal pay.
However trade unionists were back out demonstrating over backdated wages at council headquarters on Tuesday.
It is understood the local authority may have to fork out £10million in backdated wages if the pay rise backdates to the start of GMB's appeals in October 2020, which would involve multi-million pound payments.
At a meeting of the full council on Wednesday it was agreed that the date from which the regrading would apply should be reviewed.
The council noted that it "recognises the critical role of the council’s care at home staff in supporting the most vulnerable members of our communities and believes that the contribution of care staff has been traditionally undervalued".
Today (Friday) GMB Scotland said the review should be completed "urgently" but organiser Cara Stevenson commented: “This review is welcome but should not have been necessary.
“The council has, after a long process and two appeals, finally accepted the pay of our members properly reflects their role and responsibilities.
“According to its own procedures, the wage rise must now be backdated to October 2020 when the council formally began the evaluation.
“That is what our members expected and that is what our members will continue to fight for.”
