South Lanarkshire Council is increasing awareness of online safety for children.
The local authority’s child protection committee is supporting the National Child Online Safety campaign which is increasing awareness of the importance of online safety to parents and carers of children aged eight to 11-years-old.
The Child Online Safety campaign was launched by the Parent Club on February 8 and it has four significant messages.
The first relates to opening up about online safety and encouraging parents and children to talk about it, set rules and establish good habits online.
Another message is to protect children online, as some will engage in risky behaviour, despite parents believing they have put sufficient safety measures in place.
Parents are also asked to be aware of online dangers, a message of the campaign is to help parents prevent exposure to inappropriate content, messaging strangers, grooming, unauthorised spending and online buying.
The final message is to make children feel safe; the campaign aims to help parents to take an interest in their child’s online activities and to have fun online as a family and to build trust and confidence in their child.
There is a hub available with advice for parents, it includes ideas to feel more informed on the steps they can take to keep children safe online.
The online hub is provided by Parent Club and includes information and videos for parents to ensure their children are protected when using the internet.
