South Lanarkshire Council highlights successful pandemic work

South Lanarkshire Council has outlined its annual performance in helping the community respond to Covid.

The local authority has highlighted its success in dealing with the pandemic across the areas of education, wellbeing and assisting businesses.

The council managed to deliver over 5800 Chromebook devices to pupils to support their learning and to keep them connected during lockdown.

More than 570 mobile wifi devices were also given out to families who had little or no internet access during the pandemic.

More than 1100 pre-loved items were donated to the 2021 winter clothing campaign which was led by the council’s education services.

The council also delivered 14 Sensational Summer Session Clubs during the holidays which were attended by nearly 800 children, including 151 with additional support needs.

And the council was responsive in supporting people throughout the pandemic in other ways, with the community helpline taking 52,822 calls from 2021 to 2022.

The council also supplied 1880 food packs to vulnerable groups as well as referring 565 households to local foodbanks during the pandemic and 291,984 meals were distributed directly to individuals and families or to food organisations in communities.

The local authority also helped businesses throughout the crisis, as 4256 payments were made to taxi drivers and operators under the 2021-22 scheme, totalling £4.779 million.

Around 51,014 free school meal payments were made during school holidays and self-isolation, totalling to £1.590 million as well as 28,549 Scottish Child Payments to low income households totalling £4.278 million.

And the council also assisted 232 businesses with Scottish Government funded discretionary grants of £2.7 million to help during the pandemic.
