South Florida Airport Workers Can't Afford to Live Where They Work. Two Airports. Two Fights. Same Crisis.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA - OCTOBER 22: Democratic Congressional candidate Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) joins with labor and union workers as they make themselves heard during a protest at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on October 22, 2026 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The Briefing

  • In 2024, hundreds of Fort Lauderdale airport food workers threatened to shut down every FLL restaurant unless Delaware North raised wages — they secured a new four-year agreement by year's end, running through July 2028.
  • South Florida's housing crisis has since deepened: the National Low Income Housing Coalition's 2026 report now puts the Fort Lauderdale-area housing wage at $44.87 per hour — up from $40.42 in 2024 — placing the metro third among Florida's most unaffordable rental markets.
  • The airport labor fight has shifted to Miami International, where approximately 130 Areas USA concession workers authorized a strike in June 2026, citing wages that fail to cover the region's surging cost of living.
